History of the Real Club Marítimo de Sotogrande

The Real Club Marítimo de Sotogrande (RCMS) traces its origins back to the early 1990s, when a small group of sailing enthusiasts, led by Wolfgang Muller, gathered around his sailing equipment rental business. Their journey began with hosting the Hobie Cat 16 World Championship in 1997, where organizers were impressed by the facilities amidst favorable west wind conditions.Shortly thereafter, Antonio Muñoz secured the club's royal title from His Majesty, marking a pivotal moment in its establishment. Today, RCMS continues to thrive, offering a wide range of courses and activities to members and local enthusiasts, supported by the initial vision of Antonio Muñoz and ongoing community efforts. In Sotogrande's urbanization since the 1960s, a passion for sailing has always been present. Starting with the acquisition of a fleet of 40 catamarans, early enthusiasts congregated at Cucurucho Beach with support from the Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande, hosting annual catamaran regattas.By 1980, the club successfully hosted the Spanish Championship over three days, later relocating to Catamaranes Beach to accommodate growing interest in light sailing. In the early 1990s, formal establishment of RCMS was realized with significant contributions from Sotogrande and Sotogrande Port, bolstered by the enthusiasm of Antonio Muñoz and Don Felipe Oriol, under the patronage of His Majesty King Juan Carlos I.The establishment of RCMS's Sailing School in 1990 further enhanced sailing education and practice, attracting 500 students annually. The school, located adjacent to Sotogrande Port, became the hub for all light sailing activities, hosting initiation courses, perfection classes, and various regattas.RCMS's international recognition grew when it secured the 1997 Hobie Cat 16 World Championship, following its successful bid presentation in Huatulco, Mexico. With over 250 crew members from 40 countries, exceptional wind conditions provided a thrilling regatta experience.By the mid-1990s, RCMS expanded its focus to promote Cruising Class sailing, culminating in the organization of Spain's first Cruising Class Championship in 2000, with participation from over 40 vessels. Today, RCMS continues to host prestigious sailing events, aiming to elevate its status among Spain and Europe's premier nautical clubs with ongoing support from Sotogrande and local institutions.Currently boasting more than 480 members, RCMS remains committed to promoting sailing sports within the unique environment of Sotogrande. Through collaborative efforts, RCMS aims to join the ranks of Europe's foremost nautical clubs, continuing its legacy of excellence.
